Clinical Characteristics of Patients with Recurrent Mania

Abstract
Objectives : The aim of this study was to determine the nosological entity of recurrent mania.

Methods : This study was a retrospective chart review. Patients who admitted psychiatric unit in Asan Medical Center (AMC) and were diagnosed with bipolar disorder were enrolled. Recurrent manic patients were who they experienced more than two episodes of mania or hypomania. The control group consisted of patients with more than one admission for a depressive episode. Clinical variables of the two groups were compared.

Results : There were no statistically significant differences in the duration of illness and number of follow-up years between the 38 patients in the pure mania group and 36 patients in the control group. Patients with recurrent manic episodes were more likely to have a full time job and had a lower family history of mood disorders. And they also had a lower frequency of episodes and longer inter-episodic periods. Within episodes, symptoms such as increased sexual interest, increased consumption and grandiosity were less frequent in patients with recurrent manic episode.

Conclusion : Patients with recurrent mania have a better disease course and outcome. Some manic symptoms were observed less frequently in this group.
